Shores fights back By George Cox Sports Editor SHALLOTTE - Trailing 5-2 going into the bottom of the ninth, coach Jack Brown's Brunswick Shores Post 445 American Legion baseball team captured its first vic tory of the season in Area II’s East ern League a week ago Tuesday with a thrilling, 6-5 victory over Bladcnboro Post 268. The locals trailed from the fust in ning on when Bladenboro scored twice, and waited until their last chance at bat to notch the victory. Bladenboro also added lone runs in the fifth, seventh and ninth frames. Brunswick Shores tallied lone runs in the Hrsi and eighth. But it was the fateful ninth which spelled victory for the home team and defeat for the visitors from Bladen County. Gregg Mon walked in the ninth for Brunswick Shores and scored on an error before Scon Gore scored off a single by Mike Clewis. Later Clewis scored the lying run on a single by Brian Fleming. With two outs Wayne Branch walked, advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on a single by pinch-hitter Jason Bracey. Brunswick Shores outhit the visitors, 7-5, but committed one more error (four) than the losers. Bret Tabor, former South Bruns wick pitcher, started for Post 445 and did an excellent job, going seven and two-thirds innings, yield ing four hits and four runs while striking out 13 batters. Tabor was relieved by West Brunswick's Eric Johnson, the win ning pitcher, who finished the con test Johnson yielded one run and one hit in his brief appearance. Brunswick Shores, after playing games on Monday and Tuesday nights, will next see action in Burgaw Friday night before hosting Wilmington Post 10 at Cougar Field at South Brunswick High on Mon day. And after they departed South Brunswick, many of those players signed grants-in-aid to college. Outfielder Gales and pitcher Brian Semmens went to Campbell while third baseman Glynn Beck was lured to East Carolina. Shortstop Quinton McCracken had a full ride to Duke, playing football and baseball. Second baseman Pat Bryant earned a scholarship to Methodist. Catcher Wynn Beck signed a contract with the Oak land Athletics. Beck led the team in hitting at .519, seven home runs and 46 RBI.'Selected as the 31st draft pick that season, Beck was later injured in the minors and had to drop out of pro baseball. McCracken is now playing minor league baseball in his first season for the Colorado Rockies organization after an illustrious career at Duke, and his speed may lead the way to a major league career. "Quinton’s average is coming up (.235 last week in the rookie league) but he has stolen 26 bases," Foxy noted. "As old Enos Slaughter said when he spoke at South Brunswick’s sports banquet one year, ‘It used to be if a player didn’t hit .300, they’d send them back to the minors to learn to hit’ Nowadays, they don’t have to hit that well." Other members of that ball club included junior pitcher Tim Gescat (11-0), outfielder Stanley O’Neal, outfielders Brantley Barfield, Rodney LaBelle, Chris King, Scott Barfield, Wayne Sanderlin and pitcher Mickey Holcomb. Another thing Foxy didn’t mention, but probably re members, is that bead coach Paul Faulk parked his car at that pier and didn’t move it for about three weeks. As long as the team kept winning, his superstitious na ture wouldn’t allow him to. "It’s something that five years later New Hanover did the same thing,” Foxy said. "It would be a good com parison (between the Cougars’ 1988 team and 1993 New Hanover club). South Brunswick just had nine good, solid ballplayers where nobody really stood out like New Hanover with (Trot) Nixon." Continuing, the popular Howard said, "That team just came through with the bats and there was always an in ning where they batted around." Faulk, who is now a scouting supervisor for Cincin nati out of Raleigh, did a great job molding the atti tudes of a group of talented athletes, Foxy observed. Southport’s baseball man hopes Faulk can manage again — even professionally. "He told me when he signed with Cincinnati as a scout, that with an opening he could be a minor league manager in a few years. That hasn’t happened yet and 1 • don’t know about the situation, but I would like to see him do it. "With the way things arc, it is harder to get a man ager’s job in the minors than in the majors. You’ve got to get in the system. Once you do that, if you have a winning record they’ll take a look at you.” BOATS Affordable! 1-800-545-2293 (919) 457-9080 Over 50 percent of The State Port Pilot | is printed on recycled paper.
